{Handmade Felt Bulb Ornaments}

December 14, 2012 By meredith 15 Comments

I’ve been in quite the “handmade” mood lately, especially when it came to decorating for Christmas this year.  After realizing that my typical {and purchased totally on super sale at Target a few years back} glass bulb Christmas ornaments weren’t going to cut it this year with a curious toddler toddling around, I set out to make some handmade ornaments of my own this year.  I started with these beautiful Glitter & Mod Podge Snowflakes that might just be my new favorite project ever.  I also needed to make something for our first annual Handmade Ornament Exchange and knew that I wanted to try something using felt.    I soon settled on these cute old fashioned bulb ornaments.

To make your own, you’ll need:

felt in various colors

white floss

cording {to hang the ornaments}

fiber fill

scissors

needle

I started by using a scrap sheet of card stock that I had to hand draw two simple patterns, one for the base of the ornament and one for the gold top part.  I then got to work tracing and cutting each part out.

By this point I was getting super excited.  I loved how they looked and all the bright colors too!

I then began to sew each ornament together.  I’m not a perfect sewer by any means, but hey, they’re handmade right?!  Imperfections make them look even more handmade in my opinion.

Once the bulb part was almost sewn shut, I stuffed a pinch of fiber fill inside to give the ornament a bit of dimension and continued to sew the bulb shut.

I then added the gold square on top, continued to sew along the edges and also sewed in some colored cording to use as the means to hang the ornaments on the tree.

In about an hour, I had all these beauties…

…and they were ready to be sent to my Ornament Exchange partner!

In return, I received this super cute Wee Santa ornament.  Isn’t he adorable?

Some of you may remember a while back, we started a Handmade Ornament Exchange.  I couldn’t believe the excitement of a lot of our most loyal readers at the thought of making and exchanging handmade ornaments with one another.  We wanted to celebrate the end of the exchange {and hope that most of you that participated have received your ornaments} by having a little link party to collect all of your wonderful creations!

Feel free to link up the ornament you created and/or received tomorrow!

And Merry Christmas to all of you!
