Science Lessons and Investigations

In the elementary years especially, there are some subjects that kind of get pushed aside (history and science, I’m looking at you). When I was a public school teacher, I don’t remember ever having “the time” in the day to cover both subjects. When I did a science lesson or a history lesson, it was a short 30-45 minute block of time if I was lucky.

Now that I’m a homeschooling mom, and I have kiddos that are getting into the upper elementary and middle school grades, I definitely find the time for science (and history) lessons. I’ve learned that so much of what we do in the garden, tending to the chickens, or in the kitchen hits on a multitude of scientific topics.

We had an entire lesson from Science Lessons and Investigations a few weeks ago experimenting with sugar and yeast to make bread rise and my 8 year old already knew what the outcome would be because she helps me bake our family’s bread twice a week!

Giving kids those real-life, hands on moments of what science will look like in their day to day lives is such a gift! I love those experiences.

I’m also very thankful that I found Science Lessons and Investigations by Evan Moor from my friends at Timberdoodle. I was given a copy of the 3rd, 4th, and 6th grade workbooks to use with my children this school year. So now, in addition to our daily science around the house, I can work with each child at their own level discussing topics that are relevant to them. These books hit on so many real-life and valuable science lessons. It literally doesn’t feel like book work.

The books present science learning through in-depth investigations and observations and supports the NGSS in life, earth and physical science. There is a hands-on engagement activity or experiment for each of the 12 units. I love that there are cross-curricular activities to extend their learning as well. I’ve used them many times when a have an early riser, and we have some time to work on a subject just the two of us. It’s a nice way to get our brains working in the morning!

The state I live in requires standardized testing every three years beginning in the third grade. For any science portion of a standardized test, I feel that these books will totally equip my children with the ability to do well. The vocabulary coverage alone is such a great tool for learning!
