Felt Popsicles

September 10, 2013 By meredith 12 Comments

If you’ve been following my new series, Teach Me Tuesdays, you know that my little guy and I are focusing this month on learning his colors.  Well, because repetition is great, especially for little minds, this week’s activity is another involving color matching.

You see, I’ve got way too many popsicle sticks in my craft closet, and I’ve also realized recently that I have a felt hoarding issue.  Since felt and popsicle sticks are pretty kid friendly items, I decided to create a felt popsicle color matching activity.

You can easily make your own, even if sewing ain’t your thang {how’s that for proper grammar in an educational activity post}?!

To make your own set of felt popsicles, you’ll need:

Americana Multi-Surface paints from Deco Art {LOVE their bright colors}

foam paint brush

scissors

coordinating felt

straight pins

popsicle sticks

sewing machine

supplies

The first thing I tackled was painting the tips of each popsicle stick a different color.  I only made one for each color, but you could totally make more!

Usually I put my paints on a paper plate, but we were out, so I improvised!

Pretty, huh?!

Next, I cut rectangles of felt for my popsicles.

cut

I’m pretty sure each piece was about 6 inches x 2 inches.  That’s not a set in stone measurement though.  Cut yours to the size you want them to be…it’s not a big deal!

Once each color was cut, I folded them in half and pinned.

Now, I chose to sew my popsicles for durability purposes.  These are for a toddler after all.  If you don’t know how to sew, or simply just don’t want to sew, you could probably get away with hot gluing around the edges.  Be careful though, hot glue is…hot!

sew

Now your little one is all set to match those colors!

This activity is perfect on the go too.  Simply store all pieces in a zipper pencil pouch and you can take them in the car, the waiting room at the doctor’s office, or even church.

Happy teaching!
